Anatomy of a Scandal Season 1, Episode 6 Recap

The template is in place, but no one is going to admit it. You don’t show your hand until you know what you intend to do with it, do you? Does Sophie ask if she knows her or one of her friends, maybe Holly Berry (not that one)? She leaves, but not before making it clear that she is interested in Woodcroft’s meticulous notes. Kate rushes to her best friend’s house, telling her that Sophie knows. Yeah, she’s really in trouble here.

Meanwhile, Sophie returns home and begins to eat the cake her children have baked for them. Of course, cake time is always the perfect time to tell your wife you cheated on her in college. So, James admits that apparently, on second thought, he met Olivia on the way to Sophie’s dorm that night. They were both drunk and they had sex. Consensual, according to James Whitehouse. Sophie understands how crazy it is. “Am I to understand that a man jumped or fell to his death, ran from the scene, collided (there’s that word again) with a woman who seemed barely familiar to him and started to have sex with her? “Consensual sex,” shouts James. He explains that she didn’t seem happy with her performance, and that must be because she was a virgin. (I mean, this guy and his insight into the female mind).

James is now starting to cry. Maybe being so young and drunk, maybe he was wrong. (I assume he means consent here). Oh, but there’s more. He left out a little detail about that night with Sophie, and if you remember, that was his alibi that night. Tom provided the heroin that night, but James is the one who got rid of the evidence. His lovely wife points out that his stories keep changing. He assures her that he has finally told her everything now and he swears.

He swears it, all of you!

During closing testimony, Kate points out that James is a rapist. Surprisingly, Angela disagrees. When they change in the locker room, Angela freely confesses to Kate, admitting that they are tired of defending people like James Whitehouse. Meanwhile, Sophie comes home, sees her kids, and smokes a cigarette on her back porch. She had left her husband there awaiting his fate.

It only took four hours for the jury to enter. Sophie is back in the rafters. The foreman of the jury announces a unanimous verdict that he is, in fact, not guilty. The judge tells James he is free to go. Kate walks out of court and makes prolonged eye contact with James, and accidentally encounters Sophie in the process. And during her press conference thanking the jury and apologizing to her family, Sophie no longer looked overwhelmed with anxiety and a weak knee. Maybe she’s finally ready to face what James did head on? Besides, Kate is overwhelmed with grief and destroys her television with the remote control in her right hand.

And Jacques? He obtained a promotion to the post of under-secretary of state in charge of anti-drug policy. He tells Sophie his “essential” truth about how the teasing comment was brutal, but he said it like a game they played together. That Olivia liked risky situations. Now, incredibly cocky, he says Olivia liked it, the situation, the aggression, the dirty talk and him. Again he walks away, practically oozing arrogance and leaving a trail in his wake.

Then things start to hit the fan. Sophie shows up at Kate’s friend’s house looking for her and she confirms that James raped her. Kate is now worried since Sophie and James both know her secret identity. She calls her lover, her old boss, gets his advice, then quickly dumps him because she saw him in the first place because he wasn’t available.

Eventually, Sophie leaves James because, you know, he’s a rapist. He begs her, even kneeling before her, but she goes anyway. When he asks her what she is going to say to the children, she answers: “The fundamental truth”. She later meets Kate and tells her that the color-coded notes betrayed her. Kate shares a secret with him: her new name is correct. Kate is her middle name and her surname is her ex-husband’s surname.

To end the series, Sophie makes a false correction. She briefed the press on James and Tom’s actions that night decades ago. “The British government is about to implode. Merry Christmas, Holly Berry.

Again, not this one.
