Anitta Wows Coachella with Snoop Dogg, Saweetie and Lots of Booty

Brazilian singer Anitta has been a superstar in Latin America for years, but only now is she making a concerted move in the United States – and that move received a big exclamation point with her elaborate, wide-ranging performance. and incredibly sexy at the Coachella festival on Friday night.

Musically, the 45-minute set featured a stunning mix of genres, emphasizing Brazilian and Latin music that lifted her to stardom, but adding pop – her hit at the helm of Ryan Tedder” Faking Love,” with a brief cameo from Saweetie—rock—pop-punk “Boys Don’t Cry,” also from his just-released album “Versions of Me”—hip-hop, and a dance party led by Diplo who completed the last third of the set.

The set was just as diverse and visually arena-level. It opened with a setting based on the Brazilian favelas he was raised in, with a pool table – with Snoop hanging out, smoking a joint – in front of fake buildings on which his musicians performed while Anitta and twenty male and female dancers worked on the front of the stage.

Snoop introduced Anitta to the Coachella crowd, then largely stepped back, watching the booty action while blowing on his spliff. During the following dance segments, Anitta twerked and fondled both female and male dancers.

About 20 minutes later, a dance interlude during which Anitta put on the second of her three outfits, then the setting changed to a more urban setting – the fake buildings turning into a giant graffiti wall – as did the music , slowing down as she paid homage to her roots with “Girl From Rio,” which interpolates Astrud Gilberto’s “Girl From Ipanema,” possibly the most well-known Brazilian song in the world.

For the final segment, the backdrop turned into a giant wall of loudspeakers as Diplo – whose music has long been steeped in Latin and Brazilian influences – took over a DJ booth at center stage, peeling off remixes like “Vai Malandra” and “Medley Funk (Ai Vivo)” while Anitta and the dancers did some serious practice that culminated in what can only be called a booty solo: the dancers are gathered as she twerked with remarkable skill.

And with that, it’s safe to say that Anitta had made her mark – watch the Coachella live stream for replays on Saturday.
