Baby Keem review – The rapper proves he has more to offer than just family ties
Baby Keem, 21, arrives on Coachella’s Sahara stage late Friday night, after winning the Grammy for Best Rap Performance for “Family Ties” – a collaboration with his cousin Kendrick Lamar.
While festival gossip has suggested that Lamar might join his relative onstage, in the end, his dynamic ensemble simply serves to prove that the Las Vegas-based entertainer doesn’t need to rely on nepotism.
His set, largely but not exclusively taken from the first album of 2021 melodic bluealternates between laid-back swagger and snarling fight songs.
For the first, there is the bouncing “trademark usa”, which leads Keem to announce “It’s a motherf *** ing party tonight innit?”, “Honest” from 2019, which he deems “old s ***” , and a breezy “orange soda”.
For the latter, there’s the aptly named “hooligan,” a relentless “moshpit” aptly named, and Kanye’s hard-hitting collab “Praise God.”
In the end, the only collaborator Keem welcomes on stage is Maryland native singer Brent Faiyaz, who comes along to sing the hook for “lost souls.”
The truth is, he doesn’t need anyone else. A triumphant final version of “Family Ties” proves he’s a star on his own terms.
