Coachella 2022 – live: the third day of the California music festival kicks off

Harry Styles performs at Coachella and surprises a fan with Shania Twain’s cameo

After a two-year absence, Coachella has made its highly anticipated return.

Located in Indio, California, the Desert Festival has grown in popularity over the years for its glitzy Instagram-worthy dress code and main celebrity guests.

The festival leads the pack when it comes to innovative programming. Two of its hottest artists (Harry Styles and Billie Eilish) are under 30, while further down the carefully curated bill you’ll find some of the hottest new acts – Koffee, Amyl and the Sniffers, Rina Sawayama – mingling with old school staples such as Spiritualized and The Avalanches.

SG Lewis plays a three-hour DJ set

Coachella is always full of surprises. Not content with Damon Albarn’s unexpected cameo from Billie Eilish, British producer SG Lewis came out of nowhere last night to play an epic three-hour disco and house DJ set on the Do LaB stage.

From mosh pits to shocking guest appearances to inclement weather, these were the liveliest moments on Saturday, according to Leonie Cooper, who was in the thick of the action.

Surely the biggest act of the night was Gen Z pop sensation Billie Eilish.

“During the opening track ‘bury a friend’, a heart-pounding song about a monster under her bed, Eilish immediately heads to where she always looks happiest: surrounded by her fans on a long track. “, writes Kevin, in his four-star review.

“The crowd’s faces light up as she passes, and even when she brings in Georgia-born R&B singer Khalid for their aptly named, ‘Lovely’ duet, all eyes remain on her.

“In the years since her last performance here, Eilish has become a polished, more impactful, and somehow more vulnerable live performer than on record.”

Danny Elfman fared better with Kevin EG Perry, the idiosyncratic film composer offering an interesting departure from the usual Coachella fare.

In a four-star review, he writes, “Booking Elfman was definitely a gamble, but it’s a gamble that pays off many times over.

“He’s an artist with an impressive, varied and well-known catalog, but one that’s a far cry from the typical heritage act of festivals.”

Leonie Cooper found things to admire in Megan Thee Stallion’s main slot on Saturday, but wasn’t quite sold on the overall performance.

“Despite all the powerful capture of such sensuality by the set, there are moments that just don’t quite work,” she wrote in her three-star review. “Of course, it’s great that Megan is able to adapt to a fabulous outfit change halfway through the show, returning to a sequined turquoise bodysuit.

“But when you only have 50 minutes, walking off stage for five of them seems like a waste of time and energy. Especially when Megan leaves her floundering DJ on stage to take the reins, his lackluster hype man duties leaving the crowd confused at best and bored at worst.

In one of the funniest stories from day two of the festival, Billie Eilish fans were puzzled as the singer welcomed Damon Albarn onto the stage.

When some viewers didn’t recognize the Gorillaz frontman, he was misidentified as Eilish’s father – with some even thinking it was Elton John.

It was a mixed night for Brockhampton fans, who announced their shows in California would be their “last”.

After the band left the stage after their performance, a pre-recorded clip of frontman Kevin Abstract talking to his bandmates broke. He has something to tell them, he says in the video.

Fans were devastated by the revelation, with one writing, “I’ve only listened to Brockhampton for about four years straight, can’t believe they’re really leaving us like this.”

Chinese superstar Jackson Wang made a surprise appearance yesterday, becoming the first Chinese singer to perform on the main stage at Coachella.

The Independent’s Leonie Cooper captured Jackson’s performance at Los Angeles-based label 88rising’s Asian musical talent showcase.

“A mini version of 88rising’s hugely successful Head in the Clouds festival, it’s the perfect potted variety show – featuring spots from Thai rapper Milli, Southern singer-songwriter Korean singer Bibi and co-signed Jakarta-born singer Taylor Swift, as well as Indonesian rappers Rich Brian and Warren Hue,” she reported.

In case anyone needs a refresher, here’s how to watch Coachella if you’re one of the many who didn’t get a chance to attend in person.

(If you have been luck enough… what the hell are you doing reading this?)

It’s all streamed live on YouTube, giving music fans on the other side of the world the chance to see some of these great bands perform from a distance.

A light moment from the second night of the festival…

After joining Billie Eilish on stage for a rendition of her song “Getting Older,” Blur’s Damon Albarn appears to be singing the wrong lyrics.

It was a little snafu that didn’t escape viewers’ attention, though judging by Eilish’s reaction, the singer saw the fun side.
