Guard coach mCe says trent usually listens to music during competition but was not allowed to at VCT Masters Reykjavík

Following The Guard’s loss to Paper Rex at VCT Masters Reykjavík, “Guard-father” coach Matthew “mCe” Elmore told Dot Esports that the team’s rising star Trent Cairns listens to music during competitive matches. But he couldn’t do it during the VALORANTS the team’s short playoff series in Iceland.

In a post-match interview, mCe spoke about the team’s difficulty adjusting to the differences between playing in their training camp in Texas during NA Challengers and playing on LAN in Reykjavík. One of these changes was that Trent was not allowed to listen to music during games.

“Guys have to get used to more standard setups,” mCe told Dot Esports. “Trent listens to music while he plays, and [he wasn’t] allowed to listen to music here. It could be a nervous thing that helps calm him down, and those are things we learned that were too late to try to change.

During The Guard’s run through the NA Challengers group stage and playoffs, trent was one of the most notable names and a true rising star – and apparently beat the best in NA VALORANTS with music in the background.

This development came as a surprise to coach mCe, as it appears Trent was surprised to find he couldn’t play music on stage.

“I found out when we got here that he was listening to music,” mCe said. “Today, in the middle of the game, he opened Spotify and realized that he was actually super nervous and uncomfortable. He asked the administrator if he could play some music , [but] the administrator said “no”.

MCe acknowledged that nervousness and jitters affected the whole team, especially Trent, given that he is only 17 years old and Masters Reykjavík was his first big event on stage.

” I do not think so [trent’s level of play] was as bad as trent thought,” mCe said. “I think that he
didn’t play at his level and I think he got into his head because of that. The comments online are pretty brutal whenever you lose something like this and I think it sure hit the guys a bit.

It’s unclear if this is the music he’s been listening to in recent matches, but when searching for Nightbot commands on Trent’s Twitch channel, there’s a “!playlist” command that links to a Spotify playlist titled “Surviving 2020” which was actually created by Sentinel’s. Shahzeb “ShahZaM” Khan. The playlist primarily features tracks from Lil Uzi Vert, but also includes songs from Kanye West, Playboi Carti, JUICE WRLD, and others.

For Trent and The Guard, however, coach mCe said he plans to give the players some time off as they haven’t stopped playing since January 7. However, it’s unclear if the team plans to wean Trent off listening to music during games.
