Harry Styles started his Coachella headliner on Friday night with a simple greeting. “Good evening. My name is Harry.”
We know that the masses had to think in unison. After all, there were tens of thousands of people gathered at a polo field in Indio, Calif., to watch his set, and as many live on YouTube.
“It’s big here, isn’t it?” Styles cracked, before explaining how things would go. “For the next 80 minutes or so, our job is to entertain you. I promise you that we will do our best. You also have a job – it’s to have as much fun as possible. I want you to be whoever you always wanted to be in this field tonight.
For Styles, that meant something of a regression — to his younger, pre-One Direction days, when he sang Shania Twain songs in the car. And there she was, in the flesh, about an hour into her set, dueting “Man! I feel like a woman!” The resounding success of Twain in 1999.
“This lady taught me to sing,” Styles of Twain said. “She also told me that men are garbage.”
Twain said, “I’m a little starstruck, what can I say? No, really, I’m a fan of yours, of course. I realize that when I was writing this song, you were just a little kid. It’s kind of a dream and very surreal to be sitting here right now singing this song with you. I think I’m just in love and this song is about love. So let’s just sing about love.

The two then sat down on stools to sing 1997’s “You’re Still the One.”

Earlier in the set, Styles released a few new songs of his own: “As It Was,” which was just released, and a new track presumably called “Boyfriends,” in which Styles remarked, “Who in the audience has already had a boyfriend? Who in the audience has never had a boyfriend? To boyfriends everywhere, fuck off.
Styles implored the crowd to “please be nice” for the track’s debut. The multi-harmony acoustic song chronicles what seems to be a recurring relationship in which “you always open the door.”
Later, Styles dropped another unreleased track, “Late Night Talking.” Styles’ third studio album, “Harry’s House,” is due out May 20.
It all tied in well with Styles’ comment at the top of the set: “We’ve got a full moon, you’ve got a ticket and I have to play.”
