The last opus of Saturday night livee’s Weekend Update remembers the late comedian Gilbert Gottfried, who died Tuesday after a long illness at the age of 67.
weekend update Hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost themselves did not discuss Gottfried’s passing, but the segment ended with a photo tribute to Gottfried before moving into a commercial break.
Gottfried, known for his characteristic shrill voice as featured in Aladdin, died of recurrent ventricular tachycardia — an abnormal heart rhythm — due to myotonic dystrophy type II, as revealed by NBC News.
While Gottfried began his acting career at age 15, he rose to national prominence when he joined the 1980 season of saturday night live. He appeared in a total of 12 episodes for the sketch comedy series. He then found SNL colleague Eddie Murphy on Beverly Hills Cop II.
Before paying homage to Gottfried, weekend update touched on a number of news stories, including the New York City subway attack and Elon Musk’s attempt to take over Twitter. Jost and Che seemed as confused as Twitter users themselves, wondering what exactly the CEO of Tesla would want from the social media platform.
“It’s confusing and depressing, it’s the Giuliani of apps,” Jost said. “It’s as if the Prince of England gave up everything to marry an actress from Suit,a reference to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Melissa Villaseñor completed the segment’s comedy portraying Jost’s chauffeur, who tried out his stand-up gear.
Lizzo did double duty on Saturday, serving as both host and musical guest. While leading the sketch series for the first time, the singer made her SNL beginning in December 2019.
